How to create a virtual asset

Virtual assets let you build a simulated battery shaped to your exact specifications, so you can benchmark a real asset you own, operate, or are evaluating against a like-for-like reference.

Virtual assets let you build a simulated battery shaped to your specifications — so you can benchmark a real asset you own, operate, or are evaluating.

Available regions appear when you start creating one.

When to use a virtual asset

  • Track revenues for a battery that doesn't fit standard 1h, 2h, or 4h durations

  • Benchmark a real asset against a like-for-like reference

  • Settle PPAs, liquidated damages, or other index-linked contracts against a transparent rate

  • Hold optimisers to account against an independent reference

Getting started

Click the + icon next to Indices & Benchmarks in the sidebar, or open the all indices and benchmarks page and click New. Select your region, then choose Virtual asset as the benchmark type.

Configuring your virtual asset

Set the parameters that define how the simulated battery operates each day.

  • Duration — set in hours, including non-standard values like 3.2h.

  • Round-trip efficiency — match the technical spec of your real asset.

  • Daily cycle limits — cap cycles per day to reflect warranty, degradation, or operational rules.

  • Day-start state of charge — set the starting SoC each day.

  • Market participation — select which markets the asset participates in, and whether to include ancillary services.

A live preview shows how your asset performs as you adjust the parameters.

Naming and sharing

Name your virtual asset and choose visibility — Personal (only you) or Company (everyone on your account).

Finding your virtual assets

Created assets appear in the all indices and benchmarks table. Filter by Created by to find yours.
