How to access and use BESS forecasts on the Modo Energy Terminal

Updated over a month ago

On Modo Energy there are two ways to access revenue forecasts for battery energy storage systems (BESS):

You can also explore our Power prices and worldviews.

Forecast library

The Forecast library has a wide range of pre-loaded forecasts, to help you understand how the different characteristics of an asset impact revenues. For example, answering key questions like:

  • How much does location impact future revenues?

  • How much does cycling impact future revenues?

  • How much does system duration impact future revenues?

This is best when you're looking at wider market trends or comparing multiple parameters.

Using the Forecast library

  1. Head to the Forecast library

  2. Use the filters to select the region you're interested in, as well as any other parameters such as max daily cycles or region

  3. Select as many relevant forecasts as needed

  4. Choose whether you want to download these for analysis offline, or visualise them on Plotter

Requires a seat to the Forecast library add-on - learn more about our add-ons.

Create your own forecast

You can run our model when you need a forecast with specific project details. You can:

  • Run a specific set of inputs into the forecasting model, including location, battery size or number of cycles

  • Compare multiple scenarios for that project, such as different worldviews

  • Suitable for both operational and non-operational assets

  • Can be ran in the Modo Energy Terminal or via our API

How to create a forecast

  1. Navigate to Create forecast

  2. Enter the details for your forecast.

    1. If you are creating a forecast for an operational asset, enter the name and we will pull the parameters in for you

  3. At the top, pick your revenue strategy - either Merchant/energy focus (default) or Ancillary focus

  4. Select your worldview - Central (default), low or high

  5. If needed, amend the forecast name and click Create

  6. This forecast will be added to the navigation, and you can review how it is progressing. Once it's processed, you can download as a CSV or view on Portfolio's Future view

Requires a seat to the Forecast model add-on - find out more.

Power prices and worldview

Deep-dive into the inputs we use for our forecasts. This includes:

  • Power prices up to 2050 - every 30 minute period for GB, every 1 hour for ERCOT nodal and every 15 minutes for ERCOT zonal

  • Our worldviews contain all system characteristics up to 2050, e.g. demand, run hours for CCGT and ancillary service prices

  • Our Low, Central & High scenarios display how these inputs might change, depending on varying risk appetites

How to access our Power prices and worldview

  1. Head to the Forecast library

  2. At the bottom there are two folders. Select the relevant folder for Worldview or Power prices

  3. You can also head to Plotter to visualise all inputs for our world views

Requires a seat to the Power prices & worldview add-on - find out more.
